This potboiler starts out promisingly: Claire, an artist-turned-mom of four, is tapped to co-chair a summer gala in Nantucket. A social plum, right? Not when you mix in an old beau, a new affair, a balky co-chair, and guilt stemming from a pal’s car accident — just to name a few subplots. Claire’s a great character, but she’s got too many things on her plate for Elin Hilderbrand’s A Summer Affair to work. C+
