Nigel McCrery’s stellar thriller begins with a gruesome bang: A woman chops off her 6-year-old granddaughter’s fingers. From there, we follow detective Mark Lapslie as he tries to stop a villain slaying elderly women across Essex. While Lapslie is a cipher — his only distinguishable characteristic is a rare condition that lets him taste sound — the killer’s ruthless, calculating methods are much more fun to follow in Still Waters.
