In More Than It Hurts You, a middle-class Long Island housewife brings her sick baby to the hospital, though what exactly ails the boy is unclear, and after throwing a public tantrum, she quickly takes him home again. An African-American physician with a young son of her own begins to suspect the mother might be intentionally harming the infant, and alerts the authorities. From this germ of a Grey’s Anatomy-ready plot, Darin Strauss (Chang and Eng) spins an engaging, if not blazingly original, Jodi Picoult-style melodrama about race relations, marital dynamics, and what it means to be a parent.
