As a ballsy daughter fighting her pa (Huston, a delightful hoot) for their vast ranch, the seductively robust Stanwyck wears the pants even when sporting a girly gown in The Furies. Anthony Mann’s high-pitched, oedipal Western whiplashes from noir to romance to screwball with startling dashes of violence, all set in a broody, dark desert landscape. John Ford it ain’t. EXTRAS Historian Jim Kitses’ sterling commentary astutely places The Furies as a transition between Mann’s noir period (Raw Deal) and his rich Westerns like The Naked Spur. B+
