Songs in A&E

The name of Spiritualized’s new CD, Songs in A&E was inspired by singer Jason Pierce’s near-fatal bout of pneumonia in 2005 (”A&E” is the U.K. equivalent of ”emergency room”). Though the pun may not travel, the same can’t be said of his tunes, starting with the beautiful rock lament ”Borrowed Your Gun” and the bluesily Dylan-ish ”Yeah Yeah,” both penned before his illness. And just when you think he’s taken a turn for the cliché even an allusion to drug use — ”I’ve got a hurricane inside my veins,” he sings on ”Soul on Fire” — crescendos into a string-laden little gem.
