A headless torso in a tub and murder by clothesline kick off a night of mayhem in this inspired if ultimately unsatisfying outing from Scottish crime novelist Allan Guthrie. Struggling to care for a catatonic wife, Edinburgh ex-con Andy Park enlists his family in a scheme to blackmail his nemesis Tommy Savage, a smuggler-turned-real estate investor in Savage Night. Inevitably, things go wrong, with bloody results. As Guthrie artfully interweaves the night in question with tantalizing flashbacks, the twists keep coming…until clanky plot contrivances and a preposterous final turn undercut an otherwise solid, gripping noir.
