An old codger trespassing on an English country estate with his truffle-hunting dog is in for a nasty surprise when the dog enthusiastically uncovers a decaying human hand. Ruth Rendell’s longtime detective Wexford is assigned to the case, but as he tries to unravel the identity of the long-dead man, another body turns up, and suddenly the chief inspector has a much more complicated mystery on his hands. Though it’s nice to see Wexford again in his umpteenth outing, Rendell sketches her other characters with almost cartoonish haste, and Not in the Flesh‘s plot is downright humdrum compared with her best work.
