(FROM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) ? Jon Cryer and James Spader are starring alongside William H. Macy and Leslie Mann in director Robert Rodriguez‘s family adventure movie Shorts. The story, written by Rodriguez, is about a young boy (Jimmy Bennett, Star Trek) living in a fictional suburb who discovers a rainbow-colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it. At first, the rock wreaks havoc amongst the town’s kids, but things get much worse once adults get their hands on it. Cryer and Mann play the boy’s parents; Kat Dennings (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) has been cast as the boy’s older sister; Spader is the boss of a giant corporation where everyone in the town works; and Macy is the father of a germophobic genius. Also cast are Trevor Gagnon (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Leo Howard (G.I. Joe), Devon Gearhart (Changeling), Rebel Rodriguez (Planet Terror), and Jake Short and Jolie Vanier. The project is a return to the big screen for Cryer, who currently stars on Two and a Half Men, and Spader, who has won multiple Emmys for his role on Boston Legal and last appeared in theaters for 2002’s Secretary.
