Panic in Level 4, a slightly awkward grab-bag collection, includes expanded versions of six pieces Richard Preston originally wrote for The New Yorker, from an account of insect-ravaged Appalachian forests to the photographing of intricate 16th-century tapestries to the search for the origins of the Ebola virus. Did these random pieces really need to be pulled together in a book? Probably not. Plus, the grim photographs that now accompany Preston’s harrowing story on Lesch-Nyhan syndrome — a rare disorder that causes its sufferers to chew off their own lips — may leave you feeling like a gawker at a freak show.
