She sometimes gets carried away with poetic descriptions of the landscape and rugged men of the American West (”Bill is a man uncovered by weather — blown and rained and sunned and snowed — to the essence of himself…”). But by the time Bryant meets his demise, you may find yourself fighting tears. B+
