Three Girls and Their Brother

Playwright Theresa Rebeck is known for black comedy and hyper-intelligent heroines, and both figure in her first novel, Three Girls and Their Brother — a fizzy satire of celeb-obsessed NYC about flame-haired teenage sisters who get photographed for The New Yorker and soon become megastars. Rebeck relies on four narrators, cannily beginning with the girls’ brother (who retains our sympathy even as he tosses barbs like ”I’ve been over here on the Planet of Total Morons, someplace you apparently own property”). If the ending strains believability, well, by then we’ll buy anything — even supermodels scarfing burgers. A-
