Kinky Gazpacho

Growing up in suburban Milwaukee, Lori L. Tharps, a former EW writer, assimilated easily with her mostly white peers but always felt apologetic for who she was. Spending her junior year of college in Spain, she hoped to find her destiny and become comfortable in her brown skin. But several racist incidents in Spain, like being taunted by children singing a hot-chocolate jingle, forced her to confront her own issues with her appearance and self-worth. Many will relate to Tharps’ familiar musings on being the only nonwhite face in a crowded room — or country. And though Kinky Gazpacho can be repetitive, Tharps blossoms on every page. B
