Brighter Than Creation's Dark

Last year the Drive-By Truckers backed soul singer Bettye LaVette on a collection of roots-music covers, and you can hear that residue all over their latest, Brighter Than Creation’s Dark. Southern-rock riffs still anchor the tunes, but Brighter also throbs with pedal steel and creamy keys played by veteran R&B session guy Spooner Oldham (Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin). As for fans missing the emo-country gems penned by former guitarist Jason Isbell? Just direct your attention to several similarly attuned selections by his ex, bassist Shonna Tucker. B+
