Style forecast for 2008 -- Hot trends from ''Sex and the City'' and ''Revolutionary Road''
God knows we’ve all had Sex on our minds for the past few months — the HBO variety, that is — but with the slew of promising trendsetters planned for release this year, Carrie and her tutu may have to share the limelight. Here’s a toast to the movies that we’re looking forward to taking style notes from in 2008.
Hippie Hippie Shake
Sienna Miller’s already made news for what she wasn’t wearing while filming this ’60s-era comedy (the star won a lawsuit against Brit tabloids for publishing nude shots from the film). But we’re more interested in the clothes she does have on (fringy ponchos, fabulous Mary Janes). (TBD)
Oppressed by their suburban digs, former Titanic dream team Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio find other ways to live out unfulfilled ambitions…like dressing in smart ’50s fedoras and white gloves. (December)
Sex and the City: The Movie
This one’s a no-brainer. Stylist Patricia Field, responsible for bringing big-flower brooches and nameplate necklaces to a store near you, works her magic on Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte once again — some four years after the series finale. Good thing, as Coco Chanel once opined, ”Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” (May)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
In this F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation about a man (Brad Pitt) who lives his life backward from death to birth, expect Cate Blanchett as the enduring object of his adoration to rewind through decades of fantastic fashion history. (November)
And the Rest of the Best…
The Wachowski brothers’ futuristic Speed Racer, adapted from the Japanese comic books, can only forward fashion (May); chances are we will be just that into the clothes on Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly & Co. in the rom-com He’s Just Not That Into You (August); Rachel Weisz gets set up for a con — and a delicious wardrobe — as an eccentric heiress in The Brothers Bloom (Year-end).
