Saddam Hussein has recently fallen, and a famous old Kurdish musician (Ismail Ghaffari) and his sons ride a rattling school bus to a celebratory concert across the border in Iraqi Kurdistan in Half Moon, the magical, poetical road trip from lyrical Kurdish-Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi (Turtles Can Fly). The absurdist mysteries of fate — especially for Kurds — are, as ever, Ghobadi’s theme, and the harsh beauty of snow his favorite scenery. It’s a quiet, optimistic whisper of a picture from a country that has every reason to rage and despair. B+
