As if determined to clean out her notebook, the Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer gathers voice exercises and experimental sketches in Beethoven Was One-Sixteenth Black. The most intriguing, the triptych ”Alternative Endings,” uses sight, hearing, and smell to resolve three similar love stories. The least successful imagines a philosophical monologue for a tapeworm. (”I might have been ingested,” the parasite supposes, ”in a delicacy of raw minced meat known as, I believe, Beefsteak Tartare.”) For better and worse, these pieces are caught between telling stories and noodling on the act of storytelling.
