Ever wonder what Sade would sound like as more of a Wailer? Really? Well, look no further than Joyful, a set of reggae-infused, guitar-driven ballads. A little restless, a little worldly, the German-born singer skillfully borrows sounds from around the globe: The melancholy ”How Many Times?” is suffused with Afrobeat, while Spanish flavor wafts through an oddly upbeat cover of Abbey Lincoln’s dour ”And It’s Supposed to Be Love.” Though Ayo’s high voice can grate, her mellow grooves persist, providing just enough sweet escape.
