Twenty-five years after his last studio album and nearly a decade after being diagnosed with throat cancer, The Band’s Levon Helm turns in a modestly charming album, Dirt Farmer, of 13 cover songs. Despite his health problems, Helm’s weathered twang remains remarkably intact. And while the song selection is a bit unadventurous, he seems right at home singing traditional bluegrass tunes like ”False Hearted Lover Blues,” as well as songs by Steve Earle and Buddy and Julie Miller, whose album-closing ”Wide River to Cross” could be a lost Band classic.
