Did your love of pop culture contribute to the naming of your pet? Ever have a pet that seemed drawn to specific TV shows or movies? Still associate a pet with the piece of music that was playing 14 years ago when you tried to resuscitate it? Here’s why I’m asking:

• In the early ’80s, my family had a fish tank filled with the cast of Guiding Light. (RIP, Beth and Philip.)

• When I was in high school, I had a goldfish named Arnold, who I often caught swimming down to the bottom of his tank… and then just floating up to the top. I appreciated his ability to entertain himself, so we grew quite close. My senior year, while doing calculus homework to the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack, I looked over and saw Arnold floating at the surface. Having watched Bess Armstrong’s efforts to save her captive great white in Jaws III, Iknew I had to keep water flowing over his gills while I screamed for my mother. I reached in with my No. 2 pencil (eraser-side down) and gently guided Arnold around the tank. It was too late.

• I currently have a “nephdog” Riggs (pictured), named after Mel Gibson’s character in Lethal Weapon. When I visit my sister, he insists we watch morning Dawson’s Creek reruns together.

Your turn.
