Disney’s High School Musical 2 premiered to 17.2 million viewers on Aug. 17, making it the most-watched event ever broadcast on basic cable. While the details and script are still being worked on for HSM 3, the six members of the Wildcats gang are earning extra credit by adding new projects to their résumés. EW checked in with two of the movie’s stars, Corbin Bleu (who plays popular athlete Chad) and Monique Coleman (sassy Taylor) to find out where we can look for them next.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Have you started working on your second album yet?
CORBIN BLEU: Right now I’m actually working on different songs and just trying to figure out where to go next. With the first album [Another Side], released earlier this year], I worked really hard. It was still a first album, though. Now I definitely feel very comfortable, and I want to take it to the next level.
What do you hope to change from the first to the second?
I want to have a lot more of my hand in the work of writing it. Just putting my own creative input when it comes to it.
Does this mean you want pursue music more than acting right now?
At the moment, because of the [Nextfest summer tour] and everything, I’m focusing on music. But after that’s done, what would be ideal for me would be to go do a [big-screen] movie. The last time I did a feature it was called Catch That Kid, so that was a long time ago. There are a lot of different scripts and things that are coming in. We’re trying to figure out what’s next.
What type of role are you looking for — do you want to do something more serious?
Oh, absolutely. I think it’s time to take it to another level. It’s always fun to have a challenge. Something that makes it a little more of a transition into being an adult. Not that I would want to, you know, go completely over the top and be very edgy and risqué, because I would never want to lose the core audience that I have right now. It’s about continuing to grow up like I have naturally.
Do you have a dream project or someone you would love to star with?
Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors. Meryl Streep — I absolutely love her work. Just working with people that are truly legends and who have been though it. That rubs off. You learn from them.
Do you have a role model?
I really, really respect Jamie Foxx… He’s a beautiful singer, he plays the piano wonderfully, he’s an incredible actor. He’s just a very well-rounded person. I very much admire that.
Sounds like you want your career to follow in his footsteps. How do you plan to do that?
Playing a few roles, and then go do another album, and then go work on Broadway! [Laughs] I love change. I love trying new things.
As far as HSM 3 goes, are you definitely going to sign on?
Right now we’re in the negotiation process. I would love to be able to see a script. I think all in all it would be really nice to have some closure to this whole HSM phenomenon.
