On her third solo album, Versatile Heart, Linda Thompson’s clarion voice graces songs from a variety of genres, from the languid lounge rockabilly of ”Do Your Best for Rock ‘n’ Roll” to the brokenhearted acoustic balladry of ”The Way I Love You.” Folkophobes who fear that the Brit (the storied ex-wife of singer-songwriter Richard Thompson) might be a tad too trad are advised to check out the Rufus Wainwright-penned ”Beauty,” which features a duet with Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons) and may well be the most compelling, if only, avant-chamber-pop treat of the year.
