Power-pop group The Click Five kicks out hook-filled jams that should take to radio like tweens to a High School Musical concert. On their sophomore disc, Modern Minds and Pastimes, they expand their oeuvre, drawing inspiration from the ’70s (digital disco loops on ”Headlight Disco”), the ’80s (dramatic Cars-inspired synth riffs on ”Addicted to Me”), and the gloss of modern rock (on the propulsive ”Flipside”). But their lovelorn lyrics are banal at best, and ultimately, the pop-rock confection packs maximum velocity but not a lot of punch. B-
