As Edith Piaf, Marion Cotillard does a furious piece of acting — it’s less a performance than a possession. This impassioned biopic slams forward with a trippy gusto that leaves you longing, at moments, for a more orderly treatment. Yet it touches Piaf’s greatness, which was her ability to draw the ardor of life out of tragedy, pouring it into song until tragedy and happiness became one.
