Shawn Mims attracted more than his fair share of haters earlier this year with his brain-meltingly repetitive single “This Is Why I’m Hot.” (He also nabbed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, so don’t feel too bad for him.) That song’s incessant radio reign distracted many listeners from an important detail—namely, that the other songs on his debut album weren’t half bad by any means. Now, evidently unfazed by the threat of a legal challenge to his logo, Mims is back with a video for his second single. (Check it out below.) Will “Like This” make him a two-hit-wonder (or more), or is his tautological “hot ‘cuz I’m fly” status about to come tumbling down?

Well… this clip isn’t going to do much for my campaign to defend Mims. For some reason, it opens with 10-15 seconds of the now-tiresome “This Is Why I’m Hot.” And things don’t improve much once the real song starts; “Like This” sounds like a third-generation photocopy of “Hot,” especially when Mims starts bragging about how many ringtones he sold last time around. The visuals, too, are all generic rap-video fare: attractive women swaying in the club, Mims standing way too close to the camera, etc. About a minute before the video ends, though, it fades into another forgettably-titled Mims song, “Just Like That” — and believe it or not, this one sounds sorta great. Mims is still far from a lyrical heavyweight, but that little bonus snippet has way more charisma than the entirety of his first two singles.

What do you think, PopWatchers — am I crazy to think that Mims has some legit potential hidden beneath his mediocre singles? Is there anyone out there who actually bought his full album and can back me up on this?
