A Canadian porn star (Shawn Ashmore), nuns in Africa (Sevigny, Sandra Oh, and Olympia Dukakis), and a woman smuggling donated blood across China (Liu) are confronted with the global AIDS crisis in 3 Needles, a visually exquisite — but not always cohesive — drama.
EXTRAS Deleted scenes reveal a backstory for Sevigny’s character, already the film’s most complex; an informative doc on pediatric AIDS in China suggests we’ve made progress fighting the disease. After two hours of watching well-intentioned characters fail to do just that, it’s a welcome epilogue. B+
