This is weird. Blogging about a blogger’s birthday party? And not even a benchmark age like 30. But of course, this is no ordinary blogger. Perez Hilton, the self-proclaimed Queen of All Media, now 29, commands the attention of millions on a daily basis as his website feeds the public’s insatiable craving for the latest gossip. And after two years of vilifying (Kirsten Dunst), outing (Lance Bass), and championing (Paris, Paris, Paris!), he’s giving the tabloids a run for their money. But these days, he’s much more than a celebrity gossip hound. Perez has a VH1 reality show in the works, a world tour planned, and talk of a major merchandising line — he is the celebrity. And so he was celebrated.
The big bash went down at the Roxy, whose marquee displayed a gigunto “Happy Birthday Perez” above the red carpet (yes, of course there was one), as well as touting several surprise musical guests. When I ran into Perez the other day at his office (the Coffee Bean at Sunset and Fairfax), he promised some big names, but wouldn’t reveal any. I thought maybe John Mayer, since I know he’s in town. A friend had heard Christina Aguilera. What partygoers ended up getting was Donovan Leitch as Hedwig, followed by his dad Donovan singing “Season of the Witch,” a quick cover of Bowie’s “Suffragette City” with Dave Navarro on guitar, Dita Von Teese and electro-punk band The Gossip. Not exactly A-list, but entertaining nonetheless.

What was even more captivating, however, was the summit of starlets seated at the back booths. At one end, Von Teese and posse, at the other, besties Kelly Osbourne and Amy Winehouse, who didn’t leave each other’s side the whole night. Amy was supposed to be en route to Paris today, but stayed behind to party with her good bud, Perez. And it didn’t take long before Perez’s other good pal and namesake, Paris, was brought into the picture (literally, check out the introduction above). Unfortunately, the two or three words they exchanged at that moment were pretty much it, partly because the room was loud but also because Amy looked decidedly uninterested, opting instead to fix her make-up with the help of a pocket mirror. She certainly has that in common with Paris.
Meanwhile, Dave Navarro and Donovan Leitch headed across the alley to the Rainbow, where they sat next to Cypress Hill’s B-Real and briefly chatted with Andy Milonakis. The trio of Paris, Amy, and Kelly slithered out shortly thereafter, and the night was essentially ended. All in all, good times for everyone. Hats off to the folks at Fusion who organized the shindig and Perez himself. Love or loathe him, he’s here to stay.
