Following his documentary about the Rolling Stones, expected out late this year, Best Director Martin Scorsese will reteam with The Departed screenwriter-William Monahan on The Long Play, a drama about two friends navigating the music industry. Also in the works: an adaptation of a children’s novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Best Supporting Actress Jennifer Hudson will head to the studio to work on her upcoming album with producer Clive Davis.

After lending his voice to Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, Best Actor Forest Whitaker will fly off with Winged Creatures, about a group of strangers (including Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce) who survive a random shooting. He also recently completed the crime drama The Air I Breathe and the fall thriller Vantage Point, costarring Sigourney Weaver.

Best Actress Helen Mirren plays a book collector opposite Jim Broadbent and Brendan Fraser in 2008’s Inkheart, a big-screen adaptation of Cornelia Funke’s young-adult fantasy (the first in a trilogy) about story characters coming to life.

Do we detect a theme? Little Miss Sunshine‘s Alan Arkin will play Emily Blunt’s father in the black comedy Sunshine Cleaning, about enterprising women who mop up crime scenes. You’ll also catch this Best Supporting Actor (along with Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep, and Reese Witherspoon) in the political thriller Rendition.
