Brian Baumgartner’s favorite songs

1. THE POLICE Synchronicity (1983) ”It reminds me of high school. It has that classic ’80s pop-but-not-poppy sound — the high-vocal stylings, that very pure, crisp sound — but with so much feeling behind it.”

2. JOHNNY CASH At Folsom Prison (1968) ”Oh, man — he’s just got so much passion, so much heart. What that album meant at the time, and what he did for both country and pop music, is pretty incredible.”

3. JAY-Z Reasonable Doubt (1996) ”When I’m looking for nods and respect from the kids, I blare Jay-Z and rock out on the freeway. Old-school.”

4. TOM WAITS Mule Variations (1999) ”It’s that deep, gravelly, classic Tom Waits. It’s all about the lyrics and the emotions behind them: You just sort of go with the voice and let him take you on a little story.”

5. U2 The Joshua Tree (1987) ”Every song — ‘Where the Streets Have No Name,’ ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ — is just so powerful, so universal. For pure Dwight Schrute-getting-pumped-up passion, you can’t beat Joshua Tree.”
