Why wait to review the movies when we can grade the teasers?

It must be hell cutting a horror trailer. You want it to be moody and unsettling, but the temptation is always there to just go for it. The problem with the tail end of the spot for this John Cusack haunted-hotel-room flick is that it goes for it. And misses. B

Rescue Dawn
The buzz on this Vietnam-era POW movie is terrific, and I believe it, coming from director Werner Herzog and starring Christian Bale. But so much of it looks like outtakes from Rambo: First Blood Part II, I just can’t take it seriously. B-

The last time we saw a bunch of astro-scientists confined in a spaceship and going bonkers was in the god-awful Event Horizon. I have higher hopes for this sci-fi flick, from Trainspotting‘s Danny Boyle. Of course, we’ve all been burned before. B+

Take Commando, The Bourne Identity, The Fugitive — basically every action movie ever — throw ’em in a blender and add Mark Wahlberg as the Sniper Who Knew Too Much. That’s not to say it doesn’t look like fun. Just not fresh. B
