If Andy Roddick were auditioning for American Idol, he’d select a number by Bananarama or Menudo. Katie Couric? She’d bust out a little Linda Ronstadt — “Faithless Love,” to be specific. And Neil Patrick Harris would sing “Rocket Man.” At least that’s what all of ’em told People magazine recently. That article sort of made me realize, deep down, probably 90 percent of us have mulled what song we’d perform if we got dragged out in front of Simon, Paula, and Randy.

Me, well, I’m not gonna pretend I’m so cool that I haven’t occasionally mistaken a karaoke stage for the Kodak Theatre, nor will I hold back on sharing my Idol audition track: “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie (pictured). Think about it. The range isn’t all that demanding, there are plenty of pauses where an untrained warbler like me can catch his breath, and most important, who’s gonna be able to resist that bit about “THE SERIOUS MOONLIGHT!”? It’s a guaranteed winner. Now tell me: Which song is going to get you your golden ticket?
