”Our biggest challenge in this movie was making the water feel real,” says director Andrew Davis in the commentary. If only they’d extended the same courtesy to the trite characters and dialogue. The Guardian is still a watchable, if waterlogged, tribute to the U.S. Coast Guard, with a rugged authenticity, low-key Costner, and bearable Kutcher.
EXTRAS An alternate ending revives a key character from the dead; a making-of doc and tribute to the USCG prompt awe for both the feats of real-life rescue swimmers and the production’s 750,000-gallon wave tank.
