Answer to the question posed above: Iggy and Kelly are sharing custody of Mike Watt, the pioneering punk bassist (the Minutemen, fIREHOSE), who’s currently playing and recording with Pop’s reunited Stooges, and who also just performed on half a dozen songs for Clarkson’s spring 2007 album. Now, I don’t think there’s anything strange about Watt shuttling between the proto-punk vets and the American Idol winner; he’s a versatile guy who’s served as a session sideman to lots of singers. But I was amused by his remarks in a Billboard interview about recording with Clarkson, whom he praised for her intensity and work ethic, but only after this backhanded swipe: “I heard that Kelly won some game show, but I was really impressed how she sang her ass off.” C’mon, dude, I know you think you need to dis Idol to kep your punk-rock cred, but what could be more punk than flipping off the purists to play with an Idol winner? Besides, you don’t have to be ashamed that you secretly sing “Since You’ve Been Gone” in the shower. Everyone else does, too.
