Live at the Fillmore East is the inaugural entry in a planned series of archival Neil Young releases finds him in March 1970, transforming the twang of his second solo LP (Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere) into a string-scraping squall. The early lineup of thunderous backup band Crazy Horse heard here would be short-lived, due to guitarist Danny Whitten OD’ing in 1972. Which makes the brevity of this crystalline album (its six songs are only half the length of the original show) all the more disappointing.
