The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
Brand New have long been the thinking person’s emo band, the group most likely to save the sad, samey genre. But on their major-label debut, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, frontman Jesse Lacey now seems more concerned with saving his soul. Gone is the self-reflective wit of 2003’s Deja Entendu, replaced with beefed-up guitars and overwrought references to God (”Jesus”), the temptations of His downstairs counterpart (”Millstone”), and the more corporeal devils of the music biz (”Sowing Season”). Pray for better results next time.
