The acoustic performances on Skin and Bones — recorded at several L.A. concerts last summer — showcase a softer, more reflective side of Dave Grohl and company’s lean, muscular sound. Considering the quiet turn that the Foo Fighters took on last year’s In Your Honor, that’s no surprise. But the best parts of the set list are the older tunes, hushed down and retrofitted with subtle filigrees of violin and piano; some of their most familiar hits sound even better in the new format, including a countrified spin through ”Big Me.”
