Remember how Sin City looked so cool but didn’t hold together, story-wise? (I know I’m not alone.) Here’s another CG-heavy Frank Miller comic adaptation that looks great. Let’s hope this true story of a bloody Spartan battle captivates as well. A-

Smokin’ Aces
There was a time when every other movie looked like a Tarantino rip-off: fast talking, guns blazing, retro-hip cool. That time has passed. Which is why this spot looks so fresh. And the cast is killer: Jeremy Piven, Alicia Keys, Jason Bateman… B+

Notes on a Scandal
It’s amazing, given Judi Dench’s long, glorious résumé, that I was surprised by the mean streak she summons here, playing a bitter, lonely educator who stumbles onto co-worker Cate Blanchett’s infidelitous secret. The best kind of naughty. A-

The Good German
There’s something wonderfully pulpy about this spot, from the heated music to the lush black and white to the luminous cast, who all look like they’ve fallen into a Michael Curtiz film about post-WWII Berlin. A
