El Paso quartet Sparta have evolved from abrasive, post-hardcore thrashers into an emo act with top 10 ambitions. Their third and most polished full-length, Threes, matches intricate guitar jousting with a melodic stickiness recalling a punkier U2 (the shimmering midtempo ”Erase It Again” sounds like an Achtung Baby outtake). Unfortunately, they’ve also copied some of the Irish band’s worst habits — awkward aphorisms and vague emotional angst — which keeps Sparta from the artistic heights they’re this close to reaching.
