The French-American chanteuse’s 2004 breakthrough, Careless Love, sold a million copies worldwide and garnered her buzz as the new Norah Jones. Half the Perfect World, on which Madeleine Peyroux reteams with producer Larry Klein, is similar to Love — some covers, some français, some hold-their-own originals, and the freakiness of how much Peyroux sounds like Billie Holiday. From a languorous cover of ”Everybody’s Talkin”’ to an intimate, lovely duet with k.d. lang on Joni Mitchell’s ”River,” World is like stumbling into a jazz café at closing time, when the performers are lingering on stage, not ready to leave the music.
