The most intriguing entry in a five-film-noir box misleadingly called The Dark Side of Hollywood, Behind Locked Doors, an obscure non-Western by director Budd Boetticher (so early on that he’s billed as ”Oscar”) is about a detective (Richard Carlson) who commits himself to a mental institution to locate a corrupt judge hiding out there. Gigantic Johnson (Plan 9 From Outer Space) is the most recognizable patient, but the real entertainment is in Boetticher’s quick, lean storytelling and steady building of suspense. EXTRAS None.
