Recalling the Quidditch and magical beast pamphlets J.K. Rowling issued to quell Potterphiles is this companion to A Series of Unfortunate Events, whose final volume appears next month. The Beatrice Letters concerns the mysterious namesake of Lemony Snicket’s book dedications (”For Beatrice — When we were together I felt breathless. Now, you are”). While we get some answers — Beatrice knew the Baudelaire orphans and their nemesis, Count Olaf — this cutely packaged dossier raises even more questions. What clue do the punch-out letters spell? Beatniks care? Brisk acne tea? Or a sad prophecy about this book: Beatrice sank.
