Brooklyn’s Hem hired a 21-piece orchestra to add lushness to their latest set of melancholy country-folk. Too bad they forgot to write any songs. Funnel Cloud slides past inconsequentially, with Sally Ellyson’s blandly pretty soprano wafting over minor-key guitar arpeggios, plinked piano notes, and that big drifting nimbus of strings. Occasionally, they work up a little head of steam; ”The Pills Stopped Working” has a sturdy backbeat and a melody that sticks in your head. But the tunes are largely monochrome — mood music of the most soporific kind.
