Come What(ever) May
The Iowa quintet bills itself as a more tuneful alternative to nü-metal megastars Slipknot, with whom it shares a lead singer and a guitarist. Come What(ever) May, Stone Sour’s second CD, accordingly, serves its punishing riffs with a heaping side of heartfelt melody. In the right proportions, this combination creates moments of genuine catharsis; the Bush-bashing title track will go over particularly well at the Family Values Tour’s blue-state stops. Too often, though, the band settles for a flaccid power ballad or a hollow snarl.
