Cowhand Thomas Haden Church and estranged uncle Robert Duvall shield a passel of Chinese women from killer thieves in Walter Hill’s revisionist oater. At three hours, Broken Trail‘s plot hits some potholes, but Deadwood‘s Hill shoots his gun battles with efficiency, shattering the bucolic mood with convulsive violence. EXTRAS In an AMC featurette, writer Alan Geoffrion calls his patchwork plot ”a collection of true stories” rather than straight history. Black hat Chris Mulkey likens the luxury of the elaborate period set to ”being dipped in chocolate.”
