Director’s-cut DVDs: Which are the best?

”Extended Cut” or ”Director’s Cut” DVDs seem to come out every week. What is the best extended/director’s cut you’ve seen? — Gabe Villani

You’re right that there’s a profusion of them, Gabe. Just to pick among recent or upcoming ones, certainly the current Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier, with its 1979 and 2001 versions, is a valuable look at a filmmaker’s intentions and what actually made it into the theaters. Also be on the lookout for the upcoming October director’s cut of Terry Zwigoff’s Bad Santa, which renders that terrific black comedy even more bleak and funny.
