Formed a little more than a decade ago by Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes and friends, Gov’t Mule has become a singular sort of phenomenon: the best ’70s hard-rock band to emerge from the ’90s. The lineup has changed since the 2000 death of bassist Allen Woody, but the sledgehammer sound remains as punishing as ever (as the Bad Company-on-steroids ”Mr. High and Mighty” definitively demonstrates). Some might find the Mule’s single-minded boogie aesthetic on High & Mighty irritating, but their dedication to craft is edifying, life-affirming, and deeply satisfying.
