All Iraq war documentaries contain a hefty ratio of yesterday’s news; maybe that’s why most of them have come and gone like vapor. My Country, My Country centers on the troubled and fractious elections that took place in January 2005, and though the events have a rambling overfamiliarity, there’s a real story between the lines: the resentment over the U.S. occupation on the part of non-insurgent Iraqis. Director Laura Poitras follows a Sunni candidate, Dr. Riyadh, whose hope for the future fights the despair on his face — a despair that, in all likelihood, got left out of yesterday’s news.
