Ali Farka Touré, who died in March, was a farmer and the mayor of Niafunke, Mali, as well as an uncommonly soulful guitarist. Savane, his final recording is more than just icing on a 30-year recording career: It’s an elegant summation of his work, which linked West African music with American blues not by hokey fusion but by magnifying their shared DNA. Here, he plays exquisitely languid grooves with a Malian ensemble including multiple n’goni harps and singers, while the occasional harmonica and sax float by, sounding entirely at home.
