Heartless Bastards’ initial offering, 2005’s Stairs and Elevators, was full of nice, if ordinary, Midwestern blues-rock?save for the loin-tingling vocal belting of Erika Wennerstrom. On their follow-up All This Time, the pub jams have been scrapped, and the music has been elevated to the level of Wennerstrom’s singing: The Cat Power-like piano ditty ”Into the Open” is backed by bass with a bottom as big as prenup Star Jones’, and on all 10 tracks the loud-quiet-loud guitars extend into beautiful walls of fuzz.
