”Final Destination 3” features a ”Choose Their Fate!” extra

The tyranny of Hollywood — in which the destinies of characters are determined by seasoned movie professionals?finally comes to an end with the DVD of Final Destination 3 (R, 93 mins., 2006) and its ”Choose Their Fate!” bonus feature. At various points during the horror sequel, the action pauses and the viewer is asked to decide what a character should do next. A simple coin toss can determine whether or not several of the movie’s teen principals perish in a gory roller-coaster accident. On other occasions, the decisions are not life or death but which horrific death (being fried by a tanning bed or electrocuted by it?). On the other hand, as EW complains to director James Wong, one character’s gruesome weight-machine-oriented demise remains the same regardless of which path is picked for him. ”You’re absolutely right,” Wong admits. ”He either gets his head splattered very quickly, or not so quickly. That one didn’t work out as well as we hoped.” Regardless, Wong says, audiences should get used to having characters’ fates in their hands. ”I can see studios spending the extra $500,000-700,000 to have this feature,” he predicts. ”But it only works for a certain kind of movie. It’s not going to work for Million Dollar Baby!”
