This just in from the Office of Shameless Self-Promotion: The World Series of Pop Culture kicked off last night on VH1 (and will air all week with new episodes at 10 p.m. EDT), and while it is indeed a joint venture between the music network and Entertainment Weekly, that’s not to say it isn’t good, clean, nail-biting fun. I should know: At a media event last week to promote the series, Team PopWatch (consisting of Gary Susman, Mickey O’Connor, and yours truly) was part of a single-elimination tournament against eight other teams of three. Our feisty foes included folks from VH1’s Best Week Ever, FREE FM radio, and local cable news outlet NY1, but thanks to Gary’s vise-like memory for film trivia (seriously, IMDB has nothing on him), my disturbing ability to recall Dancing With the Stars contestants, and Mickey’s no-longer-secret knowledge of celebrity justice, the PopWatchers took home the top prize, and Mickey’s tournament-winning answer earned him a fabulous new nickname. (HeadScratcher answers should henceforth be addressed to “Divine Brown.”) Ch-ch-check the show out for yourself and see if you’ve got what it takes to win a World Series ring.
